This article seems more AFL-focused but it IS about stadiums, and the article picture has rectangular and oval shaped stadiums.
The Burswood peninsula would become the "gateway to Perth" under a revamped stadium proposal rapidly gaining support.
AFL heavyweights, including chief executive Andrew Demetriou, are likely to be shown the proposed stadium site this weekend during their annual visit to Perth to meet the West Australian Football Commission, West Coast and Fremantle.
The proposal would place the stadium at one of the four final sites considered by the stadium task force and potentially create a sporting and entertainment precinct to greet visitors coming from Perth Airport.
South Perth MLA John McGrath flagged the proposal publicly after meeting a focus group aiming to create a more vibrant entrance to Perth.
The group includes WA Tourism Council president Paul King and fellow tourism industry representatives Margaret Wilson, Chris Pye and Brian Rakich, along with Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi.
WAFC chairman Frank Cooper said commissioner Murray McHenry had been briefed on the site and the AFL Commission were likely to be shown it this weekend.
The WAFC would move to a new stadium provided its finances and access to the stadium were safeguarded, Mr Cooper said.
Mr McGrath said the Burswood site offered the chance to create a precinct and avoid disruption to sport while it was being constructed.
"You can do it at a place like Burswood. You can build it while Subiaco Oval is still being used and you can then sell off the land at Subiaco," he said. "Subiaco has little, narrow one-way streets people are trying to get in and out of. A new stadium would put another 20,000 people into that, creating more traffic hazards."
Mr King said the stadium was one of several projects which would make Burswood a strong entrance statement to Perth.
"We want Perth to be a better venue for visitation, tourism, events, etc," he said. "The Burswood Dome isn't big enough. Subiaco Oval isn't big enough. It begs the question as to whether the Burswood golf course is the best use for the land."
Ms Scaffidi said the land did not fall in her jurisdiction but Perth deserved a strong entrance and residents deserved key infrastructure such as a stadium.
The stadium task force overlooked Burswood as its chosen site because of fears that decontaminating, then stabilising the former tip site, could add as much as $200 million to the construction cost.
But task force representatives also believe that reclaiming houses either side of Subiaco Oval to create an adequate stadium site would add $150 million to $200 million to the cost of redeveloping that stadium.

I wouldn't read a lot into that picture B&B the oval is the old MPS and the rectangle is bigger than the oval......it looks like something they got the work experience kid to knock up from existing images.
However any option which includes a proper rectangular stadium will do me!
Actually, if we could have a dedicated rectangular stadium of about 30-35K and a 60K reconfigurable oval I would be a pig in shit!

Tell the AFL to commit the hundreds of millions they are going to pour down a black hole somewhere between Parramatta and Penrith to better use. Then they can have whatever stadium they like here in Perth.

Burswood makes a lot of sense; good railway links into Perth with Burswood and Belmont Park, good access to the freeway and carparks already there, too. Looks like Burswood loses it's golf course, though.
So it's win-win then?
