Hello All,
My name is David Smith and I've just taken over the Sport FM 90.5 radio coverage for the Western Force this season.
Some of you may already be aware of me from the station's coverage of Perth Glory.
I'm planning a huge improvement on what was provided for Force fans last season.
Instead of taking a "host" feed of away games I will travel to all games within Australia and New Zealand to provide Force fans with coverage slanted towards our team. It means 11 of the 13 games will have our own commentary team. The exception are the two games in South Africa.
As the season approaches I'll provide you with more details about the coverage, and each week during the season I'll update you on the broadcast plans for that week.
I'm now in the process I've finding sponsors to make the coverage possible. If your company would be interested please contact me at forcerugby905@hotmail.com - please provide your name, contact numbers and company details.
I'm thrilled to be involved with the Force coverage this year. I am listing some of my broadcasting experience.
- Commentated on 2 Olympic games, including Athens 2004 for Ch7
- Commentated on the last 2 Commonwealth Games
- Commentated on the 5/6 Nations championship for Eurosport
- Spent 10 years in BBC Radio including World Service and National radio, starting in 1979.
- Specialised as a sports commentator since 1994 - for 6 years with ITV Network and regional stations in the London, Central and Meridian areas.
Fantastic news David. Welcome to the site and all the best for your coverage in 2007.

Education is Important, but Rugby is Importanter!
good to hear David... I will be definately be tuning in.
Good Luck!!!!
To some its a six-pack, to me it's a support group.
welcome aboard David!!
Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
Cheers David - look forward to your commentary.
Anyone going to South Africa so that David can get some 3rd party commentary?!
CHEERLEADERS ROCK!!!
Hi again,
Just to confirm all 13 games will be broadcast live on Sport FM 90.5.
11 will be done by myself on-site with a well known Rugby personality.
The 2 games in South Africa we'll take the coverage from a local South African station.
We will have talkback after every game for at least 30 minutes, so if anyone does go to the South Africa games we'd be very happy to have you call in with your views.
Not in Afrikaans I hope!Originally Posted by DavidSmithSportFM

Don't mention the word Perth Glory...Some of you may already be aware of me from the station's coverage of Perth Glory.
Its a banned word![]()
As a new contributer to this site I would just like to put a few cards on the table so that we can live in harmony.
I will not enter into any slanging matches with other stations. I am happy for fans to listen to the respective stations and make their own choice about who they want to listen to. I have chosen an ID that clearly identifies who I am.
Sport FM 90.5 has a clear signal that stretches throughout the Metro area, and no-one should imagine broadcast rights were distributed on the basis of any concern about the signal strength of any existing broadcaster of the Force.
The rights have been distributed widely as the rights owners have an open policy in regards to their distribution, namely if a station expresses an interest and can a) afford the rights, and b)maintain a sufficient broadcast quality.
I hope that members of any other station will identify themselves and refrain from any knocking of another station's product.
David the Whole Force Forums already knew about my association with Wisdom Media, as I have been briefing them on news throughout the last two seasons. While also trying to shed light on the latest in news on Perths rectangular stadium as a journalist for www.austadiums.com
It is a bit hasty to suggest as soon as you come on here, that people don't know who I am...I have been an established member since December 2005 well before the start of the Western Force Season.
I was just giving a little bit of friendly advice, knowing the sort of atmosphere around here...I will refrain from posting in your threads if you wish me to do this.
Thanks
Chris Egan.
Welcome aboard David, I look forward to you being an active TWF Member and us developing a strong relationship between the two parties, perhaps with the sharing of resources (sound clips etc).
So far we have been able to enjoy a good relationship with several media outlets/individuals and, as you say, it is all about choice and target demographic as well.
On the main we have found that those from the media have been very open and giving with their time and infomation and those who have gained the most respect are those who get involved with the discussions, as much as acceptable for their position, rather than treating TWF as a running advert.
I'm sure you can appreciate that and here's to a great S14 Season, the Year of the Force!

The more stations broadcasting rugby the better. Good luck to all .
Keep it light hearted, boys.Let's not look for issues where none exist.
This reminds me of a story I read in some magazine last week when [insert C grade Celebrity's name here] got uptight when a nightclub bouncer wouldn't let him in and he/she/it carried on with the old chestnut "don't you know who I am?"Originally Posted by Egan
Hi again,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
You can expect full support from Sport FM 90.5 during the coming season. I will make audio freely available to you once its been broadcast, or if we've decided not to run something we'll pass it on to you as well.
I will certainly join in some discussions, especially where I have something I feel is worth contributing. While away with a team you do learn things which they are happy for fans to know.
In return I hope you'll all become enthusiastic callers on the Talkback.
I've never had a problem with friendly competition. If it has the effect of raising everyone's game it can only be to everyone's advantage.
Sounds great David, and welcome.......we look forward to you having Coach of TWF on as a guest....
