ACT Brumbies coach Andy Friend is considering a major selection shock, labelling rookie flyhalf Matt Toomua ready for Super 14 rugby.
Toomua appeared a distant second-in-line behind Christian Lealiifano who owned the No10 jersey in 2008 following Julian Huxley's season-ending injury in round three for the key pivotal role this year.
But Toomua has emerged as a genuine flyhalf contender according to Friend.
''Watching him training, yeah he is ready, but it's another thing when you're playing full contact. That said I watched him play a few club games last year and I have every confidence that, if asked, he'd be able to step up to Super 14 rugby,'' Friend said of Toomua.
''Matt's got some tremendous attributes in the way he can read the game and the way he can control a game.
''He's a beautiful ball carrier, he just keeps the opposition guessing. He can square up an opposition very, very well.''
While Friend said he was impressed with Lealiifano's efforts last year, the coach refused to guarantee him the No10 jersey.
''There's good competition there and that's very, very genuine competition,'' Friend said.
''Matt's got a great pass, a lovely kicking game and good vision. He understands trends in the game.''
