In atrocious windy conditions Palmyra saw off a determined Wests- Subiaco at Tompkins Park today.
Wests scored a try in the opening minutes of the game with a gale force wind behind them but after that were not given any opportunity to score by a powerful Palmyra defence. In fact Palmyra scored two trys into the hurricane in the first half, which virtually wrapped up the game, while the only opportunities Wests were able to take advantage of were those given to them by a petulant referee.
Kiti Fulina fought his heart out for Wests at number eight but almost every break he made was nullified by the ferocious tackling of Palmyra flankers Jerry Viriki and Tommy Ratahai. Tony Alatini played a match winning game for Pally at five- eight and handsomely compensated for the unavailability of James Stannard.
While Wests were reputed to have the superior scrum, this was not evident in the game. To the contrary, Pally more than matched Wests for the first 60 minutes and then pushed them all over the field in the final 20.
The only aspect of play in which Wests had superiority was their speed and support to the breakdowns which could have been costly to Pally but for their high work rate in defence.
For Wests it is now a desperate scramble for the fourth place on the ladder against Perth- Bayswater while Palmyra have the opportunity of wresting second place from Kalamunda.
{Editors note: the last paragraph above is a crock of shit, intended to rub Perth's nose in it for their arrogance going into the game against Kala}
