MITCHELL RETURNS TO INTERNATIONAL DUTIES AFTER SPEEDY RECOVERY

Emirates Western Force winger Drew Mitchell was today called up to the Australia A squad as a replacement for the injured Mark Gerrard.

Mitchell, who damaged ankle ligaments in a training mishap prior to the team’s final-round Super 14 clash with the Brumbies, was rushed into the Australia A camp after recovering from the injury.

The 24-year-old was originally expected to remain on the sidelines until the start of the Tri Nations series, however the ankle responded well to treatment.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

A kick in this game is like a rather nasty alcoholic shooter, only as good as it's chaser...

Sad that it is one of ours, but very hopeful that this is an indicator of the new Wallabies set-up...if you are out, even for injury, you have to earn your way back into the team.

Granted it's not a wallabies call up but it's a good stepping stone! If he gets out there, carves it up and looks completely injury free then he might be a chance for tri nations.

    Top stuff Drew.

i wouldnt say that he has to 'earn' his way back into the team, his being out for a while and has probably lost a bit of fitness not being able to run, Robbie probably just wants to make sure he has the fitness and stamina in his legs before promoting him to test level.

Vickerman is injured at the moment but i highly doubt that he will have to 'earn' his way back into the team.

players that have already played for wallabies would hardly have to earn their way back into the squad

because!! they are already good players who are representing australia and obviously can keep up this good playing and so it is like Gits, he can play a pretty crap season with missing lots of penalties etc but he still undoubtedly gets picked

Can't agree at all there- if people played crap all season there'd be no place for them in an international team, no matter who they are (not that I think Gits played a crap season).
In Drew-boy's case the Australia A move is sound- both to prove that his fitness is up to scratch after the lay off and to prove that his form is better than those in the team already.
For what it's worth, I was pretty impressed with Hynes- having only seen the one QLD game this year (and promptly forgetting it for obvious reasons )he was an unknown quantity for me. Saturday's performance might have been unpolished, but thought he had some good moments there that are encouraging for the future- he's certainly got some speed on him!
As for Lote, as I've said before, think he's been playing some decent rugby this year, and until that ceases to be true, i'm more than happy to see him in Wallaby gold- my only question- where were the gold Lote boots??? Y'know, now he's wearing a uniform they kind of GO with?
