It’s topical to do an audit on the Hooker position with Stephen Moore’s move back to QLD in 2017 and this might be blood in the water for others to catch up. The recent NRC unearthed some handy Hookers for most franchises. So here are the WA notables and leaving the possible Aus Under 20 Hooker in Terrell Berryman out.
From 2015 Perth Spirit and 2016 Super Rugby there will be at 6 notable Hookers. Old proverb when you think you have depth then you do not have the depth. Let us start the audit
Exhibit A. Nathan Charles – 26 years of age, 76 appearances for the Force with 63 starts and 4 Test Caps. Escaped the clutches of the Brumbies when there was an injury crisis at the Force. More confident now talking up his chances for the next World Cup. Height 183cm Weight 104 kg.
Exhibit B. Heath Tessmann - 31 years of age, 52 Super Rugby appearances 42 with the Force since 2013 after representing the Rebels. Signed as short term cover to provide injury cover. Late signature this year can he read the writing on the wall. Height 182 cm Weight 105 kg.
Exhibit C. Tom Sexton – Just turned 26 years of age. On a one year deal EPS, 5 Super Rugby appearances from Rebels. Had a pedigree career in Ireland as former Irish Schoolboys captain and Ireland Under 19 and 20 representative. Height 178cm Weight 105 kg.
Exhibit D. Harry Scoble- Coming on a big burst from the Future Force. 21 years of age. The anointed one and a red head. Height 180 cm Weight 101 kg. Ready to break through.
Exhibit E. Anaru Rangi – 27 years of age from Nedlands via New Zealand. Highlighted as a player to watch in the NRC by Tai McIsaac and Brett McKay of The Roar described as “He’s an absolute beast; he’s been carrying well and bashing blokes in defence.” Height 181 cm Weight 117 kg.
Exhibit F. Conan Houkamau – 22 years of age from Wests Scarborough via New Zealand. Had some game time in the 2015 NRC. Has some pedigree as a former NZ Schoolboys and Force A representative this year. Height 183 cm Weight TBA.
