"All the home unions are tied up with the Lions, and the only other big drawcard is France. Les Bleus are touring South Africa next year in June.
So that left the ARU scrambling to put together three Test match rivals.
The timing could be better but fair play for the Test against Fiji, and let’s hope the Pacific Island nations get consistent chances to play Tier 1 nations outside World Cups.
As for Scotland and Italy, would you honestly care if one of those was canned and a new concept was created for Australia’s best rugby players to strut their stuff in June instead?
What kind of new concept? Glad you asked.
What about instead of a “meh” Test against Scotland-lite or Italy in a year like 2017, Australian rugby plays a State of Origin game instead?
.....
Given they produce the vast majority of players, the combatants must be NSW and Queensland, and all those players who hail from either state would be repatriated to their home state for a week......"
So im thinking well seeing as The Spirit just pwned NSW and QLD I it should be a combined QLD & NSW vs WA![]()
I read that article and thought 'what a load of shite!'
A state of origin only not including any states other than QLD and NSW
So an exercise in Rugby masturbation with Brett Papworth as the circle jerk master.
NRL State of Origin is in my opinion one of the main reasons why the country only has Two clubs outside the Rugby 'Heartlands' and why another Perth NRL team is always going to be tough to resurrect.
I'd be interested to see the speculative line-ups
On a side note, Argentina and Australia could play a test-series
Japan and the Pacific Islands for Aussie Super 9's!
Let's have one of these in WA! Click this link: Saitama Super Arena - New Perth Stadium?
Well the Reds folded because they had a roster filled with East coast players, 10Mil debt, no supporters, difficult sponsorship and the NRL showpiece 'state of Origin' played no part in showcasing any talent that might've come from the West. It, by design, locks out players that by circumstance may not have been brought up in QLD or NSW and that is sad.
At least with Super Rugby and in turn the Wallabies there is a stronger focus on Spreading the Love (for now at least)
It has taken 10 years for WA pathways to start consistently producing Super Rugby level Talent though I guess, so that sort of thing does require a big investment with negative short term gains.
OK. I sort of get that. But I don't see it as a reason for not expanding. The Reds were simply a victim of a of their own bullshit (in their original bid documentation) and to a lesser extent, the battle for telecast rights.
I'm pretty sure they won't come back any time soon. They are probably happy with what they are doing here, as am I, and will continue to build on that.
But I agree with the common opinion; if the Force fail they'll step things up pretty quickly.
"The main difference between playing League and Union is that now I get my hangovers on Monday instead of Sunday - Tom David
Another one is a 3 way short comp NSW , QLD and WA and other states combined team..
Who wrote this utter dribble. Test Rugby is the pinnacle regardless of whether we play the All Blacks or Europe's slops because there is a Lions tour on.
Hold on cat, if the run a NSW vs qld state of origin, that'll keep Papworth and his circle of jerkers busy trying to find somebody to pay a TV station to televise it and free everybody else up to get on with the business of not killing rugby
Faaaarrkkk
80 Minutes, 15 Positions, No Protection, Wanna Ruck?
Ruck Me, Maul Me, Make Me Scrum!
Education is Important, but Rugby is Importanter!
Why am I not surprised?
What does surprise me though is that Georgina wrote the article and it got published.
Utterly disgraceful.
Surely that's some kind of theft?
