Sydneysiders, any input on how meritorious this actually is?
Sounds a tad Tier II to me?
Sydney school wins world title
May 08, 2007
A WESTERN Sydney school has become only the second Australian team to win the World Schools Rugby Tournament in Japan.
Westfields Sports High School from Fairfield West defeated Japanese school Higashi Fukuoka High 36-19 in the final on Saturday.
Westfields is the first Australian team to win the tournament since Sydney's Kings School won in the competition's inaugural year, 2000.
It made the final after an outstanding 20-17 win over 2005 and 2006 New Zealand champion Christchurch Boys High in the semi finals.
Westfields' director of rugby, Hugh Carpenter, said the win was a testament to the players and staff of the school and their commitment to the school's rugby program over the last 18 months.
"We have purposely put together a rugby program that is centred on development," Carpenter said in a statement.
"All the young players that contributed to this excellent win have a long way to go to reach their best and we want to ensure that the rugby program at Westfields Sports High can help them achieve this."
Ben Coridas, Rodney Maa and Jeremy Sua played for Westfields in last year's competition, and this year they were selected for the 2007 Waratahs Academy.
