Springboks romp home against Namibia
Full-back Percy Montgomery scored a South African Test record of 35 points as the Springboks romped to a 105-13 win over Namibia in a World Cup warm-up match at Newlands in Cape Town this morning.
Montgomery, playing his last Test in South Africa, surpassed the previous record of 34 points, set by Jannie de Beer against England in the 1999 World Cup quarter-final in Paris.
Flankers Juan Smith and Schalk Burger both scored a hat-trick of tries as the home team ran in 15 tries.
Montgomery, South Africa's all-time leading point-scorer, converted 12 of the team's 15 tries, crossed for one himself and added two penalties to take his career Test points tally to 756 and to surpass Jannie de Beer's 34 points against England in the 1999 World Cup quarter-finals.
Montgomery, who has signed to play for French club Perpignan after his second World Cup next month, achieved the record by converting CJ van der Linde's try after the full-time siren.
The score was South Africa's second highest in Tests, bettered only by a 134-3 defeat of Uruguay two years ago.
South Africa lost captain John Smit to a strained hamstring a few hours before kick-off. Lock Victor Matfield was given the captain's armband.
