I guess so, but it just goes to show that Beaver is smarter than those who teach him how to spell. The origin of the word is Latin and there never was a U in it. Those crazy Pommy bastards added the U to many words for some strange reason, labor, honor, color among others. I think that they wanted to be French. Americans being much smarter than the Poms did the correct thing and took the U out of it. Maybe one day Beavs teachers will see the light and do what is right.

Hmmm... I'm almost convinced... but not quite!
Latin is spelt like Latin; French like French; and English like English. English is different from Latin. And American English is different from English.

    Very true Em.

But, why did the English add a 'U'? Is it correct just because they did?

It's their language so I would think so.

    Indeed!

Larry was right when he mentioned the French, though - I'm pretty sure most of the Latin that made it into English came via France, so the Latin spelling changed as it was adopted into French, and then again when it came into English.

These days words seem to get assimilated wholesale from other languages and then we proceed to misspell them. But who knows, maybe that's what happened in the middle ages too, and those errors just became the norm...
So, keeping with the Italian theme, maybe cappucino and foccacia (sic) will end up being seen as correct!

Officially in Australia both English and American conventions are accepted, however you'll find that just about anyone who is a stickler in Oz lands on the British side of the fence. Very few people will stand up and shout for American conventions here (unless they have an American accent) in the case that they do, people just treat them as arrogant tourists and move on.

You will generally get less hassle and more support in Australia if you follow a British example, we being the good convict labour we are supposed to be!

    Traveling Gerry

I was the only person in the chat room for several hours as I had A) forgotten how to read a clock and B) couldn't remember when chat started anyway. Krusher arrived later in the night and chat rapidly changed to the topic of chickens.

    Some other stuff happened.

The much anticipated arrival of Sir Exile the Great finally was upon us and he straight away began reciting the alphabet as he was never really any good at the English language.

From then on, the details are a little scratchy, however i believe the rest of the night took place in an old abandoned train station just west of Alabama.

Coach, blueandblack and Jargan all arrived one after another and very soon after Jargan had insulted Coach's fine collection of old, old, old fiberglass insulation.

Coach pulled out his 'super proton micro plasma lightning .90 caliber come in and see the good good good guys proton cannon' and soon had blown off tragic's head. To this day I believe coach is still situated in a maximum security prison somewhere in central Zimbabwe.

From then on nothing much eventful happened other then Traveling Gerry finding the cure for Aids, the common Cold and Obesity, bringing the world to peace for 3 minutes, 17 seconds and finding a solution to global warming.

Quote of the night goes to Larry
    <LarryNJ> Potatoes
A couple of spelling errors (or are they just made up words in Beaver's world?!) but plenty of grammatical errors. However, it is nice to see the correct use of the apostrophe.

Are those deliberate spelling mistakes included for the sake of hyperbole?
