    Trial form irrelevant: Mitchell

Western Force coach John Mitchell says he is placing no importance on whether his side wins any of their trial matches.

The Force meet the Crusaders in Melbourne on Saturday, the first of two trials they will play prior to the commencement of the Super 14.

The Perth-based franchise will also play Queensland at home on February 7.

Mitchell said he was more interested in his players getting match time and working on their cohesion when they face the Crusaders and the Reds.

"Outcomes are irrelevant, I believe, during trial phases," he said.

"It's more about the match fitness that we gain from the situation and the fact that we can look at combinations."

Mitchell said it was obvious that the Force would be focused on bettering 2007's seventh-placed finish in this year's tournament.

"I'd be worried if we weren't aiming to contest finals, I'm sure that's everyone's aim," he said.

"But you can only do your best in the competition and we've got a few little targets within the group."

The Force open their Super 14 campaign against the Sharks in Durban on February 16 (Australian time).

Yes I understand that, but he won't be happy if we're hammered 50-nil either!

If there's only a try or two in it, it's a coin toss in a trial.

If you're getting your ass handed to you all day, that's an indicator of form!
