Thumbs down West Australians pay 17% more tax

West Australians pay 17% more tax
West Australians are the highest taxed people in the nation, paying 17 per cent more than the national average, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA says.

A CCIWA report labels WA as the least competitive state in terms of tax and says that the state government's tax take has doubled to $5.7 billion in the past six years - equal to an extra $1,219 per person annually since 2001.

In a pre-budget submission, the CCIWA is requesting that payroll tax be cut by 0.5 per cent in the 2008-09 budget and stamp duty rates on property transactions be cut to 2001 levels.

The submission, ahead of the state budget in May, says the CCIWA is concerned with the government's financial strategy and complains that "rampant spending" and unsustainable wages growth are largely funded by "overburdened" taxpayers.

CCIWA chief economist John Nicolau said the requested reforms would be affordable given the government's surpluses.

"WA's current once-in-a-lifetime economic boom is creating many benefits, but also many challenges for businesses of all sizes," Mr Nicolau said.

"It is therefore vital the state government uses today's prosperity to lay a sound and responsible base for the future to ensure the economy remains strong for many years to come.

Mr Nicolau said since the current Labor state government came to power seven years ago, general expenditure had increased by 45 per cent or $4.7 billion.

Without restraint, the spending was tipped to blow out by a further $3.3 billion by 2010-11, he said.

WA opposition treasury spokesman Steve Thomas said the tax burden on West Australians was subsidising government incompetence.

"It is also a looming disaster for WA that the Labor government is blowing the boom," Dr Thomas said.

Treasurer Eric Ripper's office has been contacted for comment.

I knew there was a reason why I left WA....

Well thy're a Labour government...that's what they do best!

I'm a firm advocate of regular rotation of government, I think about three term cycles is good. Anything shorter than three terms, and the respective parties start to get a little short-term in their thinking, but three terms of Liberal government to screw the hell out of the taxpayer and build up surpluses whilst eroding the rights of the worker, followed by three terms of Labour government to spend the budget surplus on all the infrastructure which the Libs seem to think we don't need and knock business down to a level which is more reasonable.

Too much of either party will see the delicate balance of Western civilisation crumble through one philosophy being applied to extremes!

Ox the CCIWA is a right wing Liberal Party think tank? WA runs the Australian economy apart from Qld. Gigs summed it up beautifully! and lets stick with rugby.

Re the stadium issue, they do indeed suck for not having the cojones to make a decision.

We will never get approval for a rugby/soccer/league stadium whilst this bunch of socialist pricks is in office. I have heard that Alan Carpenter believes that Rugby is a game for the priviledged, private school set. What bloody hope have we got. Remember, this is the man who detested Colin Barnett because he sent his sons to a private school.

AFL, and he will push as hard as his brown nose will let him

If you make $100,000 a year roughly how much would you pay in taxes? If you house is worth $400,000 what would you real estate tax be? What other taxes are there, Sales tax ect. ?

Larry, we don't pay tax on home ownership, no matter what its value. We don't pay death taxes either. Our water is provided (17% desalinated) at a fraction of its cost of supply and distribution.

We have universal health care provided free of cost, subsidised private additional health insurance, and universal pensions, subject to a means test.

We have Government provided unemployment assistance, disability and parenting payments, subsidised public transport and free public schooling to university level at a world class standard.

    And we have Joblot.

you have asked a lot of questions there Larry.

$100,000Aus (90,680.73 USD) = $27,850.00 (25,254.58 USD) including $1500 of public health charge (Medicare Levy) which virtually all Australian Residents pays

a $400,000AUS family home does not have any any property tax or real estate tax on the family home. Also if the Family home is sold for a profit over its purchase price there is no Capital Gains Tax charged on the profit.

Sales tax in the United States as I understand it is a State based Tax, here in Australia there is no Sales Tax - majority of goods and services are charged a 10% Goods and Services Tax also known as a Value Added Tax.

As far as other taxes are concerned, thats a big question.

Stamp Dutys on the purchase of Property or Cars/Trucks etc are a State Tax and that depends on where you live.

Excise on petrol(gas) is a Federal Tax and is huge its approx 45% of the actual price we pay at the bowser.

    hope this helps Larry

we also have a health system that struggles to handle the population. as does our road system.
the pension for the elderly is also a joke. they get the basic amount needed to live and no more. even after paying taxes for a lifetime.

    And in America?

Hey fellers, lets agree to disagree and get back to the Rugby as TLH suggested.

Burgs was right in a post long ago- this site is no place for politics. If you want a good political argument I can privately recommend a few sites where we can bash ourselves silly.

What's the latest word club wise re player recruitment/movements?
