You need to educate them - choose a good pseudonym and don't give any details that will give their ID away. Email addresses are private and no other information is required I think? A whole new world for some! Spam is pretty minimal (and hopefully actually useful?), and you can turn off the option to receive any emails anyway.

I think you are misunderstanding what they mean. I know several people who periodically look at the site, but aren't members. In essence, while they are interested in the game, they don't feel confident enough to express or defend their opinions. Some never will, others just need time to develop some confidence.
