‘Green’ Tahs help out at Visy Recycling - Source: NSW Rugby
This week, Waratahs stars Timana Tahu, Lachie Turner and Tatafu Polota-Nau joined their former teammate and environmentalist Al Kanaar at the Visy Recycling Plant in Sydney's west to find out what really happens to our recyclable waste.

The players were given a tour of the Smithfield plant, which processes around 40 tonnes of recycled materials per hour. The plant is the largest of its kind in Australia, processing more than half of Sydney's councils' recyclable waste on the one site.

Each year Visy Recycling collects and processes more than 900,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard, about 450,000 tonnes of glass, more than 20,000 tonnes of plastic and about 5,000 tonnes of metals.

"It's been a real eye-opener coming out to see just how big this place is, and how much is recycled every day," said Timana Tahu, who is recovering well from a hamstring strain and is expected back for the Waratahs' week six crunch match with the Crusaders.

"The entire NSWRU organisation is tackling climate change, from recycling office waste to using renewable energy at the Stadium, to using recyclable materials such as [the plastic] in Visy Tah Man's suit," said Kanaar, who has been the driving force behind the Waratahs campaign to help curb climate change since his forced retirement due to injury earlier this year.

As well as firing up the Waratahs and the crowd at home games this season, Visy Tah Man will be out and about in the community, in particular taking his environmental message to schools.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
