Toulouse break the bank for Carter

All Black flyhalf Dan Carter is being offered the biggest contract in world rugby - £750,000 from Toulouse for one season in the French Top 14 championship.

Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reported that the bid, doubling the highest salaries in the English game paid to fellow All Blacks Carl Hayman, at Newcastle, and Luke McAlister, at Sale, will outstrip any from the most ambitious British clubs including the Ospreys, who have been in talks with Carter's financial advisers.

The All Blacks can't compete with an offer which will treble his salary and are increasingly resigned to losing their most valuable player when his contract runs out at the end of the year.

The only question is whether the 26-year-old flyhalf signs for Toulouse or Toulon, the Second Division promotion contenders run by former All Black captain Tana Umaga.

Money has been no object to them under the presidency of Mourad Boudjellal.

Any All Black playing outside New Zealand automatically forfeits his right to Test status but Carter can exploit his fame in Europe for 18 months and still be back in ample time for the 2011 World Cup.

A season and a half in Toulouse would earn the star No.10 more than £1million.

I make that to be about AUD 1.5 mill..nice..then he's back in time to do a S14 or two and the World Cup. If it does triple his current, I'm afraid it is sayonara Carter, shame for the S14 really.

But it's not only the money - fancy getting a chance to play with George Gregan etc.. in the south of France - dreams are made of stuff like that

BTW did you hear Umaga has been banned form the ground for a couple of weeks for the on field incident. GG wasn't involved as he was already in the sin bin for giing lip to the ref.

Sounds like Toulon is more of a retirement home for over the hill players to have a bit of fun in....

I think you could be right, James
Dunno how Carter will handle that sort of fun.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Thinking of Gitts and the lack of signature - if he is of contract at the end of 2009 - he could go to Toulon for 2010 pick up a lazy coup0le of mill - return to super rugby for 2011 and play in the RWC 2011.

Simple plan - might even catch up with some ol mates while there - during the speech at the TWF Players Night - one of the things he said about the Baba's was how much FUN it was - guessing the Force Camp would be as much Fun as Carpenters Cabinet meeting - while Ripper is explaining why they shouldn't spend some of the massive surplus on a rectangular stadium.
