Narrogin 16 and 17 year old team

well this week i started putting out the word that we are trying to start a 16 and 17 year old team. so hopefuly we get a few juniors turn up for training. 2004 was the last time we realy had juniors at the club but that involved them going to perth to play every weekend

does anyone have any tip on what to train them at first.

    touch is great

if they have never played before then having little games at training helps, like 5 on 5 or 7 on 7.

Get them on the Scrum Machine and beef them up with pies after training.... 5 yrs time we could have a all narrogin bred front row for the force!!!

Check their core skills first. eg tackling, passing off both hands, running with the ball.

Touch helps alot with helping them start learning the basics of attackling rugby, such as drawing the man and passing. Offensively, they learn to create gaps by running overlaps, drawing the man etc. In defense, it enables them to learn certain defensive drills like rush defense and drift defense as well.

Tackle, Tracking, evasion, winning contact......If you don't have those four, the rest is a waste of time!

Even if you do this work without a football to start off with, get them used to tackling, getting tackled and how to win the encounter both defensively and offensively.

I personally think you can't overestimate the importance of the breakdown and getting youngsters to organise this area of the play. Kids will watch high level games and want to do the outside back thing because it looks cool and it makes commentators bar up, but they'll generally avoid the leadup work because it's a hard, thankless job......done well, your name might be mentioned once in a blue moon but your team will win heaps!

Dunno about first, something that gets them keen I guess, Dave will have that covered, but as a new team the emphasis should be on tackling IMHO.
Chances are they will spend more time defending than attacking due to skills and playing more experienced teams.
If you can get a bunch that will tackle all day then you will earn the oppositions respect and keep the ego damaging score lines to a minimum.

In '89 Scotch College 1st XV went to NZ North Island, were continually thrashed by border line triple digits, scored one penalty goal for the tour and nearly wore the shoulders of their jerseys out tackling.
Although obviously out of their depth in playing local 2nds & 3rds, they actually made the local paper after the last match for their courage and tenacity in tackling.
Came home and Scotch went two years undefeated in the PSA off the back of that experience, no one could score enough against us!

a disappointing turnout as no one showed though did have interest from a 15 yearold i work with although he work when we train.

i think the way to go might be to go to schools and and iform them on how good rugby is
