A rugby match in New Zealand's West Coast league was abandoned last weekend after one of the players threatened to shoot the referee.

The match, between Grey Valley and South Westland, was halted when one of the Grey Valley players told referee Steve Manzies he would 'put a bullet in his head' after a Grey Valley player had been yellow-carded.

"The South Westland players had to actually escort the ref off the pitch," said a spectator.

The local union chief declined to comment, saying only that a meeting with the club in question had taken place.

Menzies himself said that he had not been able to identify who had made the remark, and so no player had yet been disciplined.

"There are ways and means of dealing with things," he said.

"And target practice is not one of them."
