Rodney So'oialo will fill two roles for the injured Richie McCaw in Saturday's Tri-Nations rugby test against South Africa.

So'oialo, a regular choice at No.8, was named to wear McCaw's No.7 jersey and as New Zealand's captain for the opening match of the Tri-Nations series, the first of two tests between the All Blacks and Springboks on successive weekends.

Regular skipper McCaw has been sidelined for six weeks by an ankle injury suffered in the second of two tests against England on July 21.

His absence, a heavy blow to the All Blacks, has led to the selection of a rearranged loose forward trio.
