    South Africa make four changes

    South Africa make four changes
    July 17, 2008 - 4:39PM

South Africa have recalled No.8 Pierre Spies, centre Francois Steyn and fullback Conrad Jantjes to the starting line-up for Saturday night's Tri-Nations rugby Test against Australia in Perth.

Spies got the nod ahead of Joe van Niekerk, who played in the previous two Tests against New Zealand, Steyn replaces the injured Adrian Jacobs and Jantjes reclaims the No.15 jersey from veteran Percy Montgomery.

Schalk Brits has been promoted to start at hooker in place of the suspended Bismarck du Plessis.

Reserve hooker Adriaan Strauss, who only joined the squad on Tuesday, has been named on the bench and will earn his first Test cap if he takes the Subiaco Oval field.

South Africa: Conrad Jantjes, JP Pietersen, Francois Steyn, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Butch James, Ricky Januarie, Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Victor Matfield (capt), Bakkies Botha, CJ van der Linde, Schalk Brits, Gurthro Steenkamp. Reserves: Adriaan Strauss, Tendai Mtawarira, Brian Mujati, Andries Bekker, Ryan Kankowski, Ruan Pienaar, Peter Grant.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Interesting that the yarpies have gone for a 5-2 split on the bench, especially picking two props and a hooker on the bench. I thought we had the scrum problems!

Well spotted Ox. Perhaps making their intentions known by hinting at the Wallaby frontrow as the Wallaby weak link and intention to shove the scrum all over the pitch the entire 80 minutes.

That is possibly the strongest side the Boks have named all year, having Percy in the starting XV would have been close to the only change I would have made.

Just about to say the same thing. Picking 2 specialist props on the bench and only having a 2 backs reserve, but even then, the 2 backs are Ruan Pienaar and Peter Grant, both of whom can only cover 9 & 10 positions. If Habana gets injured, the boks might struggle to find someone to chuck on the wing.

Watched the training session today at Pally. Pretty good to watch and even saw the likes of Kobus, the Bok legend and supersport commentator. Got some good photos with Burger, Montgomery, Bekkies and the likes. Well worth heading to.

Looks fairly strong, nothing the Wallabies cant handle, especially with the help of a few meat pies.

    Bring it on!
