South Africa win Bryan Habana took the blame after missing a great chance to go over for the Springboks in their 16-9 defeat to the Wallabies in Perth.

Habana looked certain to score in the corner in the second half but was nailed by Australia’s replacement centre Ryan Cross and dropped the ball.

Television match official Glenn Newman rightly disallowed the try and the Springboks struggled to open up the home side again.

“By my standards, in that situation, I would back myself to convert so I feel that I let the team down and myself,” Habana said.

“We pride ourselves on our execution but I wasn’t able to finish the job off.

“At this level you don’t get many opportunities. Things didn’t go as planned for us today, we had a couple of chances that we didn’t take and that cost us the game.”

Habana was eventually forced off with a shoulder injury on 66 minutes but of more concern for the Boks is the neck injury suffered by Schalk Burger, who missed most of the 2006 season with a cracked vertebra.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

I heard his comments as well, it doesn't seem to have been transcribed well. I thought his comments were much more gentlemanly, he gave credit to Crossy and basically said he was beaten by a better tackle.

Only Habana himself knows how he really feels but it looked pretty humble to me!

thats why i respect Habana as one of the world's best.
    He's good on field.
But off field, he carries himself like a true mentor and idol. Humble in admitting mistakes, but also loves his fans.
He's even got a MySpace webpage that says he would love to connect with his fans and would try to reply if anyone sent him a message.

Well Done Habana. You're a true representative of this great sport.
