    Preview: South Africa v Argentina

Perhaps the greatest picture ever of South African rugby was taken in 1995. In it François Pienaar holds the World Cup and gazes at Nelson Mandela and Nelson Mandela has only glee on his face, fists pumping high in delight, wearing a Springbok cap, both president and captain wearing a Springbok jersey with No.6 on the back. It was a picture filled with joy and hope.

Nelson Mandela will be back at the same ground on Saturday as "his boys" celebrate his 90th birthday and with them will be the Pumas of Argentina who made history on this ground 43 years ago. They have never beaten the Springboks anywhere. Will this be their chance to make history?

i would love to see the Argies get up in this one? Not being too familiar with Argentine Rugby is this close to their 1st choice side? Even if the boks win they may well be feeling rather battered and bruised

In a vain attempt to answer Jargan's query

    Argentina:
15 Bernardo Stortoni, Don't know the name
14 José María Núñez Piossek, Another one new to me
13 Federico Martín Aramburu, Nope sorry
12 Miguel Avramovic, Uh Uh not anybody I've ever heard of
11 Horacio Agulla, Heard this name before, probably a resreve from the World Cup
10 Felipe Contepomi (captain) , The only really experienced back they have, Contepomi's kicking was one of the main reasons Argentina did well in RWC '07
9 Nicolás Vergallo, Rounds out a pretty green backline
8 Juan Manuel Leguizamon, Played almost every game of the world cup, was more of a Cliffy Paly bruising straight runner as I recall
7 Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe, This guy was part of the RWC pack
    6 Martín Durand,
5 Patricio Albacete, As was he
    4 Rimas Álvarez Kairelis,
3 Pedro Ledesma, The Ledezma brothers also have quite a bit of international experience
    2 Mario Ledesma ,
1 Rodrigo Roncero. Was the grunt in the engine room of the World Cup team, I heard he'd been out of action for a while so he might take a while to get up to speed.

In short, the backline is very green and probably outside contepomi are short of experience, but they have a good few forwards who played in the World Cup and aquitted themselves quite well.

Given that the Argies played a fairly pragmatic game of Forwards dominance and clever kicking, you'd suspect that they will do OK, but not well enough....is this an ELV game? I reckon a lot will come down to that, the Argies have come to grips with the fact that they need to play this type of game to get any points and ELV's will probably reduce their effectiveness a fair bit.

I don't know if they have a good alternative kicking option either!

well if they can't beat them we can hope they smash them physically and leave them feeling a bit sore before the 3N resumes next week

It's potentially all good - what was that stat about no-one winning three weeks in a row?

A kick in this game is like a rather nasty alcoholic shooter, only as good as it's chaser...
