One year at my uncle's for Christmas, I was asked to make the fruit salad and told to use the dregs of any bottle which was vaguely fruit-flavoured to make up the liquid. My uncle had a large liquor cabinet. We had to tell drivers to eat the sherry trifle.

Even better, my uncle's father-in-law was a methodist who wouldn't touch the trifle but had 3 helpings of the fruit salad.
