    WAFC rejects Subi rebuild bid

    WAFC rejects Subi rebuild bid

Colin Barnett’s bid to put a redevelopment of Subiaco Oval back on the agenda as one of WA’s stadium options suffered another blow yesterday when the WA Football Commission said it would cost as much or more than a new stadium.

The WAFC’s stadium project director Peter Abery warned that the current site had severe limitations and would be difficult and expensive to turn into a multi-purpose stadium.

His warning echoed the words of former stadium task force chairman John Langoulant and came on the eve of a critical briefing by key stadium task force consultants for the Premier and Sports Minister Terry Waldron.

Mr Barnett spoke favourably of a gradual MCG style rebuild on the current Subiaco Oval site on Perth radio on Tuesday.

Funnily enough I do'nt remember the WAFC submission to the taskforce saying anything that sounded like that- too much to lose now lads now you were getting a brand spanker, priority status, operational control and a nice cash bonus??

    Did I miss something here?

Colin Barnett is the Premier of WA right?

The Western Australian Football Commission is a sporting body thats getting a stadium upgrade for free?

Since when does a sporting body have the ability do "deal out a blow" to an elected Government?

But not so tight that he won't shell out for a Rugby Stadium.

If an upgrade of MES was to happen or another rectangular alternative, there is no point in trying to turn Subi into a multi-purpose stadium for 1 sport

    AFL boss backs stadium rethink

    AFL boss backs stadium rethink

    Andrea Hayward, AAP

    October 24, 2008 01:30pm

The AFL will understand if the WA Government kills off plans to build a new $1.1 billion sports stadium in the current economic climate, says league boss Andrew Demetriou.

Mr Demetriou met with WA Premier Colin Barnett and Sports Minister Tuck Waldron today in Perth to discuss the stadium and other issues.

The previous WA government pledged to build a $1.1 billion stadium to replace Subiaco Oval after a taskforce backed new construction over redevelopment.

But Mr Barnett said WA had too many infrastructure commitments and a redevelopment may go ahead after the project was revisited by his government.

``We will be facing some choices, there are too many projects lined up in Western Australia, all at the moment, seemingly happening at the same time - I don't think that's realistic,'' Mr Barnett said.
