Others I am sure are going to howl it down, but to me it isn't out of the question to have a second official for that purpose.
They would be in charge of the set piece (Scrum & Lineout) while the main official waits on the defensive offside line to police that.
Once the set piece is over the set piece dude drops back behind the attacking backline until the next stoppage.
In the pro era, with so much more than just national pride at stake (ie $$$ ) one Ref is just never going to be able to monitor what is going on with pro super fit and fast athletes playing on the same sized area.
    Food for thought anyway...

i agree, a second ref should be strong considerd, AFL dont seem to have any dramas with having so many refs and it could help avoid following the NRL path in using the match official so much.

The professional game has changed the game so much with various teams trying to exploit the rules and push them to there limit that it has made it near impossible for a official to ref the match properly.

I wouldnt be so sure it would help. crap refs are crap refs. The AFL have a larger number of umpires than they used to and the WAFL increased the number of field umpires and yet they still suck.

Adding poo onto poo doesnt get you clean content. It gets you more poo.

More suggesting it would indeed be a past playing specialist B&B, they would need to go and recruit them and due to demand it may only be for Internationals.
Perhaps Kearnsey should be the first cab off the rank. Still looks as fit as most Frontrowers going around!
