    Wallabies defeat star-studded Barbarians

    December 04, 2008 10:04am

MATT Dunning snapped his Achilles tendon and Sekope Kepu tore a pectoral muscle as the Wallabies scored a torrid win over the Barbarians.

The spring tour-ending match was held at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.

What was meant to be a friendly encounter to mark 100 years since Australia won the rugby gold medal at the 1908 London Olympics developed into a brutal affair punctuated by fights and serious injuries.

Australia eventually claimed an 18-11 victory but it was scant consolation for Dunning and Kepu, who face lengthy stints on the sidelines after both starting props were replaced at the very same time in the opening minutes of a frenetic second half.

Dunning was stretchered off in agony and Kepu too grimaced in pain while being assisted from the field with his right arm cradled in his jersey.

Australia jumped out to a 13-0 lead before the match exploded on the half hour.

Lotes try came from some brilliant lead up work by Cross.

Turners try came from brilliant lead up by Mitchell.

    O'Connor kicked the pens/conv.

Kepu looked like a wrist injury and Dunning was stretched off with a torn achilles tendon.

Wonder how serious their injuries are. The Tahs had depth at least in the front row stocks until now.

Matt Dunning and Sekope Kepu suffer serious injuries in tour-ending win

    By Darren Walton

    December 04, 2008

SERIOUS injuries to props Matt Dunning and Sekope Kepu overshadowed an eye-catching debut from rising star James O'Connor as Australia's spring tour came to a bittersweet end.

Dunning snapped an Achilles tendon and NSW Waratahs teammate Kepu tore a pectoral muscle in the same scrum as the Wallabies scored a torrid 18-11 victory over the star-studded Barbarians in the first rugby match played at Wembley Stadium.

Both players are likely to miss the entire 2009 Super 14 season after being victims of Wembley's loose turf, which seemed to give way all too easily under the combined weight of the two teams' forward packs.

"It was obvious that that surface wasn't conducive to scrums," said Wallabies captain and man of the match George Smith.

The median price of doughnuts and pies is expected to rise significantly in the NSW market during the anticipated two months that Dunning will be out of training, with production expected to treble.

Mr. Rudd has high hopes of a pastry led recovery to the Nation's recessionary woes.

Seriously though the Tahs should be devastated - got to admit was kinda looking forward to seeing Dunning Kick a conversion or something - primarily because it would be unique to have a prop do that.

Guess he won't be kicking anything for a while

said Baa Baas got dragged after that incident as well. I wonder if it was any ill feeling due to the Wallabies escape in Italy the other week

I sense eddie jones may have suggested to target cooper a bit, he was coach at the Reds in 2007 and witnessed first hand how flustered Cooper got in some games, and he berated him after one game.

The pec injury is nasty, but an achilles is potentially career ending. They'll doubtless get best treatment though, so I hope they come good.

no real loss in the dunning case though, i would have being slightly more upset if it wasnt the end of the International season.

At least now its going to be NSW that feels the pain, which is a good thing anyway
