Pick the mistakes competition -Proteas are big news in Perth

Proteas are big news in Perth

    8 December 2008, 10:05 GMT + 2
Down the Track’s Aussie spy, Bruce Manly, reports from Perth
THE FINAL FRONTIER - REDEMPTION IS AT HAND

The headline in to-day’s Australian newspapers (reproduced above) does not mean the Second Coming. Nor does it herald a final push for victory in Afghanistan or a possible end to the global financial crisis.
No, it means that the Proteas have landed in Perth.
Let’s put Perth into perspective. It’s the capital of Western Australia (WA) - a state as big as three British Isles, the closest other big city to Perth is Denpasar in Indonesia. There are only 1 million people in the whole of WA - 250,000 are Poms; 100,000+ are Japies (South Africans) about 150,000 are of Asian descent and the rest dinkum Aussies.
Here, they take their sport seriously - two AFL sides, a good cricket state side, a soccer team top of the log and the Western Force in Super 14.
But it’s, in the newspaper headlines that you’ll really feel the passion for next week’s test opener at the WACA.

“Proteas can put demons to rest”
    “History calling”
“Roy set to be no1 enemy”
“15 happy landings on planet Perth”
“Bring it on - Proteas here to make history”
    “Ready and able”
    “Resuming the battle”

and we’ll leave the last word to a full page interview with Gary Kirsten (blamed for the Aussie defeat in India) : “The South African team has exorcised its demons and will not be haunted by its horrible history in Australia”. Kirsten goes on to drive the knife in about how this Protea team in not mentally scarred by past defeats.

    Don’t you just love it!

I don't know the actual figures (about from the state's population being a fair whack more than 1,000,000) but:

    a) I reckon more than half the population would have to be born Aussie (unless we're playing the 'background' card)
    b) It can't be 25% poms
    c) apparently the only africans here are from SA and the only Europeans from the UK (I assume that figure mean UK, not just England)

oh, and Gary Kirsten is full-o-shite.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) the population of WA as at 30/6/08 was projected to be 2,163,200.

The ABS figures as at the 2006 census for those born overseas in the countries referred to in the above article was as follows:

    UK 10.8% 233,625

    SA 1.1% 23,795

Asian 2.9% 62,733 (Malaysia, India, Singapore, Vietnam)

Of course there are other Asian nationalities (and African nationalities) but for current purposes their percentages and numbers are statistically unimportant.

Also it doesn't include children born here of one or both parents born in those countries. To me, they can only be described as Australian.

But I think I've proven the point that the author of the article is a lazy, uninformed, tool.

By the way, 27% of the total WA population was born overseas.

What a melting pot we are, and how lucky we are to live so tolerantly and harmoniously together.

Thanks Fulvio, I knew someone would pull that figure out from somewhere. It was also used when some journo tried to say Subi would be full of Saffa's for the test this year.

WELL! This is my new area of expertise! That theme song of mine we came up for on chat the other night was my secret agent WNC's theme song. And no details, well, details, I'm finding out about the immigration stats to WA!

Here is what the genius has discovered...

(Yes, my stats are 06, I'm working through all my info backwards.)

In the 2006 Census, 65.3% of persons usually resident in Western Australia stated they were born in Australia. Other common responses within Western Australia were: England 8.9%, New Zealand 2.4%, Scotland 1.2%, South Africa 1.1% and Italy 1.1%. ie England 174186, NewZeland 47332 Scotland 24415, SouthAfrica 22050, Italy 20,934

    HOWEVER!!

During 2006-07, the number of UK migrants settling in Western Australia reached 8,618 people -- 34 percent of all overseas permanent migrants.

I thought your theme song was about Mr Mitchell:

    BOKKE
“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Exactly. It was. And it was for my secret agent WNC stuff. Fitting, hey?

I still don't think he uses a hair straightener though!

The saffa cricket side will be exposed for what they really are this summer, Flat Track Bullies who pick on the minnows of world cricket (Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, New Zealand) and when it comes to truely world class opposition (Australia, India) they are truely grade A dissappointment

Oh and I'm off to the Cricket Thursday, and all of the Test Match next week
