New Zealand superstar Dan Carter is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines after Perpignan confirmed that the moonlighting pivot suffered a partial rupture to his Achilles tendon on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was injured in the final moments of Perpignan's 13-13 Top 14 draw with Stade Français on Saturday in front of 79,122 at the Stade de France.

The All Black had kicked his team level with a penalty two minutes from time after they had trailed 13-3 with just eight minutes remaining.

Carter's appearance against the Parisians marked his return from three weeks on the sidelines with a strain to the same Achilles tendon.

The French club signed Carter on a lucrative six-month deal but he has played just five times since arriving in December after being part of New Zealand's victorious 'Grand Slam' romp across Europe in November.

Details on the extend of the injury to his left ankle have yet to be confirmed, but club spokesman Benoît Brazè admitted that Carter has pulled on Perpignan's famous blood and gold jersey for the last time.

"He has suffered a partial tear to his Achilles tendon - an injury that could keep him out of action for up to six months," he said.

"Carter's run with Perpignan is now over.

"It's a big disappointment for him and also for the club.

"He has our support and the best possible medical help at his disposal.

"Our doctors and those of the All Blacks will now be put in contact to decide whether he will be operated on in France or elsewhere.

"At the moment he is in plaster and resting up at home."

Carter's deal with Perpignan is worth €700,000 (£615,000), which would have worked out to around £35,000 a match had he stayed fit until the end of the season.

But he now departs the scene after scoring just 45 points in 361 minutes of rugby

France rugby is unique though, Stade Francais is the only T14 rugby side in the northern half of France, the rest are all down South, the teams down South dont get crowds nearly as big.

They do love their club rugby up in the NH. Gasnier must be loving it. Heineken Cup is still the comp to beat, now that were down to the pointy end of the comp it'll be drawing some big crowds.

Incidentaly SBW actually scored a try the other day and set up one as well in Toulon's win over the only other team below them on the ladder. Tana postponed his playing comeback for another week.

They reckon Dan will be out for 6 months so that puts him out of action in the Tri-Nations this year...might give the other teams a chance!

How long had Carter been playing, last years Super 14, Tri-Nations, End of year tour, various training camps?

I read an interesting article the other day, whilst it was on Cricket it could be relevant to people like Carter who insist on going to the NH for a "sabbatical". It was about the increasing national workload for players who apparently worry about being burnt out BUT still find the time to go to the IPL or County Cricket scene to get the big bucks. I agreed with Cricket Australia's satance on not paying part of Matthew Haydens retainer fee as he injuered himself when in In India playing in the IPL.

And Rugby in France only has one sport to combat (I would imagine) and that is Football.

You get that for the Bledisloe in Sydney (then again a large proportion of that crowd goes for NZ)

NEW Zealand fly-half Dan Carter was on Sunday ruled out for the rest of the French season because of an Achilles tendon injury, having played just five matches for Perpignan.

“It is a partial tear of the Achilles tendon which means he will be unavailable for around six months,'' said spokesman Benoit Brazes.

The 26-year-old Carter, who was signed by the Catalan club on a lucrative six-month deal worth a reported €35,000 ($A71,100) a match was hurt in Saturday's 13-13 draw with Stade Francais.

His brief stay with the French side, which began in December, was plagued by injury and his time on the pitch amounted to just 361 playing minutes.

I'd prefer Carter be fit to play in the Tri-nations and loose to the Wallabies. Its always better when you beat the best they have...

Hmmm - so was it softer grounds, different training regime, favouring the earlier injury, bad medical advice, pressure to get back on the field early, not taking a rest period after last year, or just bad luck?

Wonder if the NZRU will be handing out "sabbaticals" again then...
