TRAILING near the end yet still within reach, there was an air of expectancy at Canberra Stadium last night that the ACT Brumbies would somehow conjure up another last-minute win.
This time it wasn't to be.
A third consecutive get-out-of-jail-free card couldn't be found by the home side, which recorded its first loss of the Super 14 season, going down 25-16 to the Western Force.
And nor did it deserve to escape as a winner again.
It was a flat performance from the Brumbies last night in front of 15,893 fans.
There was none of the energy and enthusiasm that had inspired them to two wins from their opening two matches.
There was no urgency in what they were doing.
They struggled to mount any genuine sustained pressure on the Force, as dropped ball cost them valuable possession and field position.
Defensively the Brumbies were disappointing.
