Well yes. Look at the farcical referendum for extended trading hours, it was knocked back! Luckily the government had the sense to step in and do something about it. What was the point in having the referendum in the first place?? What I find irritating is how "me, me, me" these referendums are. Rather than voting for what is good for the state or for most people, people vote for what THEY want. I couldn't give two shits about extended trading hours, I don't need them, but I recognise that many others do, hence the reason I voted for extended trading hours. I fully expect the state government to go ahead with a DLS plan in the next 5 years without a referendum. As the extended trading hours referendum has exemplified - we cannot be trusted to make smart, selfless choices.

Maybe the majority of people realised it would knock the shitter out of small business and help compound the domination of the national chains, even though it would be convienient for themselves individually?

as for me give me DLS any day. If the referendum was carried out with out giving the old age pensioners a vote(who can get up or go to bed when ever they like) DSL would be a fact IMO.

Snob: They have reached a balance between population and shops capable of staying open for longer.
Any time I have walked through a mall since the new trading hours have started it seems pretty much everything other than the bigger shops or national chains (Telstra Shop etc) are shut by 5.

But if you want to go DLS is stupid.
