Bulls lock Bakkies Botha handed three-match ban for striking Phil Waugh

April 14, 2009 Bulls lock Bakkies Botha will miss Friday's crucial Super 14 clash against the Brumbies after receiving a three-week ban for striking.


Botha appeared before a SANZAR judicial hearing for striking New South Wales Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh during the Bulls' 20-6 win over their hosts at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.

Judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan QC categorised the offence as mid-range where the applicable entry point is a five-week penalty.

The period of suspension was reduced to three weeks, precluding Botha from playing up to and including May 2.

Botha will miss the Bulls matches against the Brumbies in Canberra, the Chiefs in Pretoria and the Western Force in another home fixture in South Africa.

A right to appeal is available to Botha and the Bulls.

Yes its one of the things I love most about the Force- we almost never get any yellow (and never any red) cards and when we do its again almost never for dangerous tackling or general thuggery.

Do not get me wrong I hate it when he goes swinging but it is caused by his passion for the game.

In NZ it is called "Mana" it is playing the game from your hart and soul, with passion and giving it all, if blood needs to flow so be it as long as we have given it everything

anyhow Phil has been looking for shit for a couple of games now and if you dish it out you must be willing to accept a few as well

I agree entirely with the 'hard man' argument pieter. I think our Backrow already does it, but we're just short of an enforcer. Somebody who'll scare the carp out of ordinary players every time he comes near them. I don't think he needs to be dirty either. Rocky was a pretty good example IMHO, played the game to the limit, and rarely stepped over the line....more than ten times......in a match.......when he was caught......well, you get the message, he was a scary bugger!

any way, he's pretty tough, i think he'd be disappointed it he (waugh) didn't have a bleeding head in 60% of his matches.
