    Premier support for rectangular stadium

Just went to a lunch where the Premier (Colin Barnett) was speaking. Mainly discussing the redevelopment plans for Perth and surrounds. As he mentioned entertainment precincts in the City, but nothing involving sports, I thought I'd ask the question.

I asked his thoughts on the redevelopment of MES or a new rectangular stadium. In typical pollie style he didn't give a firm promise, but he did say it was something they were discussing and a decision will be made in 3 or 4 months, whether to redevelop MES or build a new one. His preference was to build a new one but didn't say where.

There were cameras there so whether it will bring any further comment, I'm not sure. Hopefully asking the question in a room full of 900 plus businessmen might stimulate some debate anyway!

Hmmm....not quite sure how to take that, but at least it seems to be on the radar. Good work though, Eley

Didn't Barnett say he'd make a decision in 3-4 months about 2-3 months ago?

Still - nice investigative journalism there Eley.

Nice one Eley. The water has been muddied a little by the talk of the Football WC bid. Pretty sure Barney Rubble has been quoted saying they are now also looking at a new Stadium at the East Perth site, probably hoping for some Federal infrastructure funding.

and of course a commitment to building a new stadium gives a good couple of years spending minimal money on focus groups and taskforces rather than committing the money to actually building something.

That was my thought - a new stadium is suddenly on the agenda because of the World Cup, but then there is no rush. So, got to review locations, get a range of designs, get them all rigorously costed, check them against a range of usages and management schemes, look at financing options, then repeat if it all that takes more than about 18 months because the costings will be out of date. Endless fun...
