WALLAROOS STAR DEBBY HODGKINSON NAMED IRB WOMEN’S PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
Wallaroos star Debby Hodgkinson – the Player of the Tournament when Australia won the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai earlier this year – has received a further accolade today from the International Rugby Board.
Hodgkinson, 28, and currently in Apia for this afternoon’s one-off World Cup qualifier against Samoa, has been named the IRB’s Women’s Personality of the Year.
A hard-running No.8 from the Cottesloe club in Perth, the English-born backrower has been a member of the Paper to Paper Wallaroos squad since 2002 and was a member of Australia’s World Cup squad the same year.
Hodgkinson, whose all time sporting idol is Muhammad Ali, was a standout for the Australians when they captured the Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens title in March.
The 178cm, 82kg forward also has visions of completing a World Cup double when the traditional 15-a-side tournament for women is staged in England next year.
“ARU is delighted by this further recognition accorded to Debby,” said ARU Managing Director and CEO John O’Neill.
“Her achievements in the women’s game and her contribution over a considerable period of time make her a thoroughly deserving recipient of this prestigious IRB award.
“I had the pleasure of being in Dubai when the Australian Women’s team won the IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens this year and Debby, as a significant force throughout, was named the Female Player of the Tournament.
“Her powerful running has been a feature of the Sevens team and the Paper to Paper Wallaroos side since her debut seven years ago.
“Debby’s motto has always been ‘you miss 100 percent of the shots you never take’. No one will ever accuse Debby of ‘not taking the shot’.”
