    SARU in the dock

The South African Rugby Union will tomorrow answer charges of alleged misconduct at a hearing in Dublin on Monday, follwing the incident where South African players wore armbands to protest against the ban handed out to Bakkies Botha.

SARU were charged by the International Rugby Board after the Springboks wore 'Justice' armbands for the third Test against the British and Irish Lions on July 4, in protest at Bakkies Botha's two-week suspension.

Interestingly, Eales is on the three-man committee hearing this.

Should read the comments at the end of the Planet Rugby report - hilarious! Hard done-by Saffers crying on each other's shoulder about rugby racism.

IRB mulling over Springbok misconduct case

Article Published: Tuesday 11 August 2009

The misconduct case against the South African Rugby Union (Saru), its players and management was heard by an Independent Disciplinary Panel in Dublin on Monday.

Submissions and evidence was heard by the Panel comprising the Honourable Sir John Hansen KNZM (Chair), Judge Guillermo Tragant and former Australia captain John Eales.

The Panel has now retired to consider its verdict and will issue its decision as soon as possible. The charges against Saru are for alleged acts of misconduct in breach of the IRB Regulations Relating to the Game, including breaches of the IRB Code of Conduct.

The action arises from the South Africa national team wearing armbands during the third Test against the British and Irish Lions on July 4 as a symbol of solidarity and protest for Bakkies Botha, following the upholding of his two-week suspension by an independent Appeal Committee for dangerously charging into a ruck without binding on a player.

The IRB will issue a statement including the verdict, sanction and judgment as soon as it is available and say that they will not not make any further comment on the hearing until the completion of the disciplinary process.
