The question is if DLS had been approved would the Labor party have voted for extended trading

So you have no problem buying fuel, beer, condoms, panadol out of hours but when I want to go and buy clothes or a new TV you draw the line

I'm not fishing .. I'm trying to understand why you say no.

Everyone here is talking about Coles and Wollies .. I'm fine with how much food is available to me after hours.. I'm talking about everything else. If K-Mart wants to open up on sunday, as does Harvey Norman, why can't they??? They are not competing against the corner hifi dealership???

Well Coles and Woolworths are prevented by legislation from selling anything other then Panadol etc. I know they sell some clothes, but I'm not a bogan so don't usually pick up the "$4 Double Pluggers".

How long have butchers products been available from those two? As far as I can remember thats for sure. Bottle shops seem to survive and I'm not talking about the Liquorlands/BWS bottlo's

I would say that various planning laws will prevent Coles and Woolworths from starting new towns just to put in another store

bottlo's are far more convenient that woolies & coles in shopping centres, in fact id be surprised if they make half as much as the drive-through places.

Im not convinced we need "late night shopping"...deregulation would be far better.

a 7pm close is ideal for just about everyone and business tapers off after this time anyway.

I am always concerned about the number of delinquents wandering around the shopping centres on a Thursday night, surely they have homework and parents that wonder where they are? If theyre gonna do that every night of the week (and they will) that'd be a big problem

The number of little chavvy kids I've seen in Tescos trying to buy (and sometimes succeeding) the White Lightning cider at one pound for a two litre bottle is depressing. Maybe it won't go that way but until you've seen it you don't know it isn't worth the risk.

There would have to be significant changes to the Liquor licencing Act before Coles or Wooloworths started selling Alcohol themselves

umm no - woolworths and coles already have their booze stores attached to them. But can we get off this idea of extended / degegulated trading applying only to coles and friggin woolies!!! sheesh! I want to wake up at 2am and buy a flaming TV!

Those are actual Liquor stores though that conform with Liquor Licencing Laws, you can't go throught the actual Wollworths or Coles cash registers and buy it. I think what James is hinting at is that overseas some stores actually sell the alcohol themselves. Eg I used to work at a convience store in East Perth, and whenever the US Sailors where in town they would always come in ask where is the Liquor....you can see where I am going here.

Politicians and beaurocrats should be the last people to decide what business does!

    Terrible!!!

$4 double pluggers is the only way to go for a pair of thongs. what tool would pay $15 for a pair of thongs?

No, the big Tescos are a mixture of Woolworths, K-mart, Target, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, pharmacy, bottle-o and garden centre. Why do you think I left the UK?
