    I didn't say that did I.

If you remember Happy, I did explain my side of the argument to you in the pub and at the time you agreed that it had merit. And, it is based on what I have actually seen happen in Scotland. It is not based on some dreamed up fantasy of the utopian world created by free will and deregulation.

Besides, what's wrong with not being completely aligned with the rest? To me it makes Perth a more attractive place to live; it has the wealth, infrastructure and the potential of any other city but with the added benefit of not feeling like some massive human fuelled machine.

Usually only in the school holidays though. Rocko and Mandurah have this and it's handy, it doesn't seem to kill small business any more than any of the anti-competitive crap wollies and coles aready pull.....as a matter of fact, Rocko shopping centre is extending ATM with lots MORE specialty stores being put in. (OK most of them are national chains, but many are franchises and therefore still small business)

It was about three months ago and you weren't drunk.

And the country has vast areas of open land, big forrests, a huge amount of animal life, why can't we have that too?

    My pennies worth:

I understand the argument based on the personal need to have more convenient shopping hours and availability of cheaper products but I also know firsthand what the longer term ramifications of this is. The dying out of the smaller business, the growth and monopolisation of the large nationals with the subsequent squeeze on pay and conditions, the inevitable erosion of quality family time........it's commercialisation going mad again. To me it is like having St Valentine’s day but 350 days a year, i.e. life turned into a complete commercial joke.

Short term benefits; convenience, potentially cheaper products and more jobs...but I say that with some reticence. Longer term advantage, if you want to call it that, we live in just another 24/7 commercial concrete jungle.

A little bit extreme but just trying to make a point.

Well, well. More positive news for the economy thanks to the Krudd Stimulus. Just think of all the new jobs for security officers and plain clothes store detectives.

It is a case of demand and supply, when deregulated trading is introduced you will find everything will balance out after the first few months. Major shopping centres with 3000 car bays and 4000 cars in them, will be no more. Instead of going on Thursday people will go another day or to a closer centre at 8pm ay night when it is quieter. As for child care being unavailable on Sundays and evenings there is no demand now, but given a market you will find they will be open. My local supa IGA is open until 11pm each night and it is a god send and is always busy so there is a demand for it. This day in age single incomes aren’t enough to support a family so a lot of people have a second job not only will this provide more casual job opportunities it also gives these poor souls a time to shop. I think you will find that deregulated trading will have a greater effect in stirring Perth’s economy that any poorly thought through stimulus package.
