You misrepresent me by referring to spite TOCC, it was bewilderment.
There are also no shortage of examples of rebranding for far greater success too.
The examples you give are all good ones for products that are in a competitive marketplace, which Rugby Union isn't. Yes there are other sports, to save that rebuttal, but there is only one Rugby Union of that level.
There is an annual competition that occurs involving the top three (and soon to be four) rugby nations in the Southern Hemisphere.
I'm quietly confident that 99% of the existing supporter base would be able to join the dots and in the meantime we are given the opportunity to have perhaps a more marketable name.
As Telecom became Telstra then "perhaps" Tri Nations could become Southern Nations. Such a move would allow them to expand in future years without having to continually change the name.

You don't have to be a Rhodes scholar to work out what a competition is with 4 teams in it, and if you follow rugby anyway, it's pretty basic stuff
A new team = a new tournament
A new tournament is worthy of a new name
Call it the Southern hemisphere rugby championship.......or whatever, Burgs was just suggesting a few names. Don't be pedantic TOCC
Marketing is everything.
Within a few weeks of the tournament proper, it would be a household name in rugby circles
Bring in the Argies and have 2 games with each nation home and away. that's good for the game

lets not forget however that there is hope that one day Japan can join the comp as well, changing a products name every few years is far from ideal. Regardless the marketing gurus employed by sanzar will tell us what the best name is
