AFL red-faced over footy card gaffe

Matthew Pavlich has often been applauded for his versatility on the footy field, but what's this - a change of code?

The AFL has been mildly embarrassed by a 10-year-old who revealed his footy card featured Pavlich in front of a rectangular sports field.

"My name is Matthew Mayne and I am 10 years old. I thought I would let you know how stupid the AFL can be," Matthew said in an email to Radio 3AW.

"I have attached a copy of an AFL Footy Plays card that you get from Thins potato chips, CC's and Samboy packets. I have collected stacks of them and I use my pocket money and buy them from the RSL when my dad has a few pots.

"Have a look at the back of the card. Can you tell me where this AFL ground is as it looks a lot like a rugby ground. I think the AFL can be dumb sometimes what do you think?"

But AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou wasn't overly fussed by the sporting confusion, joking that 'two or three people are out of a job when I get to work'.

"I don't even know if we are responsible for it, but I'll take the blame," Demetriou said on 3AW.

"Whichever brainiac decided they'd put rugby league in the background is obviously going beautifully.

"I'll look into it."

The 'Ultra-3D' footy cards feature portrait shots of numerous AFL players with a sports field in the background.

The Age is seeking comment from Snack Brands Australia, the company that teamed up with the AFL to produce the cards
