Former Cronulla and South Sydney NRL star David Peachey will this weekend play a trial match for New Zealand rugby union province King Country.

In a surprise return to the sporting field, the 36-year-old will trial for the Heartland rugby championship side on the wing in a pre-season match against a Northland Development side in the North Island township of Taupo.

Peachey, whose wife originates from Taupo, was in the region recently to explore the prospect of Cronulla playing a NRL match there.

It was then that King Country approached the 257-game NRL veteran and chief executive David Trewavas said the move could become permanent.

"We'll have a look at him and see whether he still has the speed and elusiveness, the sting and the step," David Trewavas said.

Trewavas said Peachey was ``very, very keen'' to play in the Heartland championship, which starts on August 28.

"His wife would love to come home for three-four months."
