Wireless modem

Ok, so Mrs Ecky wants to move the computer from a little alcove down the bedroom hallway to a wee corner in the dining room.

Problem is that there is no phone point there.

We have a desktop (as opposed to a laptop) computer and the wireless modem/router/thingy needs to be plugged into it to work. Apparently.

So: is there a way to keep the wireless modem/router/thingy plugged into the phone point in the little alcove down the bedroom hallway, but have the actual computer in the new location AND have modem connection?

Or do I need to get a new phone point in the wee corner?

I am sure this is a no-brainer for youse tech-heads out there, so please feel free to impart your wisdom on a poor computer illiterate.

Keep the modem plugged in where it is and try the computer at the new location (assuming you have configured and turned on the wireless facility in the modem and have a wireless network facility in the actual computer). See what happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes not depending on the site.

Another option is to get a Wireless Access Point, which is a device that connects to the modem, but allows access wirelessly to other devices.

Final option is to measure the linear distance between modem and computer and buy a cable long enough to link them, so long as the distance is < 100 metres.

Is there a blue cord connecting the computer to the modem/router thingy, if so you need to extend that cable. Otherwise, just shift the computer and see what happens.


Hang on, I just remembered, sometimes the cable isn't blue. Any cord that joins them should remain plugged in.

The Blue cable is not quite western force blue but close enough - if you go wireless speed decreases, not a problem to us but different strokes for different folks.

I don't see the problem here steve buscemi... Leave the computer where it is, this is not a matter concerning your wife as it is not in the kitchen nor the laundry.

Yeah, nah, here's the thing:

It's an ethernet cable what plugs from the modem into the CPU. I don't have a wireless facility in the actual computer.

Can I still use the wireless modem? Does it get plugged into something that sends the signal that then I need to plug something into the CPU to receive it?

If you see what I mean...

(the current cable is grey and says "ethernet". I have a yellow cable, also called "ethernet")

Ecky: The grey cable is technically superior to the blue cable, so thats fine. What you will need is an expansion card to install into the computer that has wireless capability...or maybe get a usb wireless card, which would make things easier. Then you can use wireless.

Ecky try ple.com.au for wireless cards which plug into the motherboard of your computer and wireless modems etc... whatever you choose google the actual device - you will be amazed what peps have to say about different devices etc..

The mobile wireless USB tend to have quite expensive plans compared to the plug into your phone line plans - but will be very interested in your comments on this topic as we are about to move and may have no option but to do that for a while.

im not a huge fan of wireless networking.. working in a contact centre this is the primary source of calls into us..

Client > "my internet is not working!"

CSR > " i can see you have an active Internet connection to us, sir.... are you using a wireless connection to your modem/router??"

Client > " yes!"

CSR > "@#$@%.. ok how far away are you from the modem router?"

Client > " im in the office and the modem is in the Kitchen near the Microwave"

CSR > "aaah i see.. try moving closer to the modem and see if the internet comes back."

Client > " aaaah its working now, thanks!.. why wont it work from my office"

CSR > " cause there are three walls seperating your office from the kitchen, there is a microwave oven next to the modem that can disrupt the signal, you have a tin roof and god knows what else that might reduce the signal."

Client > "aaah i see, so how can i fix it?"

CSR > " connect via Ethernet or move the router to your office if you can"

Client >"but the phone point is in the kitchen"

CSR > @#%$@#% ***curses 1980's building contractors* "then you may need to consider getting another phone point installed in the office or you will unfortunately continue to have issues with connection and speed"

Client > " oh ok.. im a cheapskate so ill live with it the way it is..."

Good point - we put our wireless router on a shelf near the ceiling - no idea why but it works like a dream even next door could join our network - obviously we fixed that with encryption but the point was it works wonderfully well- neighbour even sent to our printer "Good Evening " LOL - microwaves seem to work at interfering at about 33xHz, the modem at 1,33 xHz and the phone at 56 XHz - a proper geek will correct these frequencies if I'm confused

Is that the same as a 'Wireless USB Adapter'? I got one of these with my modem/ router. The laptop I use has wireless reception business inbuilt, so I didn't need the extra gizmo. One day, just to see what would happen, I plugged the USB wireless adapter into the old 'desktop' box in the kiddies room and after some very easy farnarkling around the old box got internet connection from the router. This little sucker was slightly bigger than one of those USB thumb drive gadgets.
