A giant scoreboard at the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens venue has crashed to the ground in the latest embarrassing mishap to blight the troubled event.

A chain support gave way at one corner of the massive temporary scoreboard at the Delhi University ground, sending the left-hand side pivoting downward, smashing the bottom left of the screen into the ground and the bottom right into the iron support frame.

Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens competition manager Kevin Culliver said it was lucky that it "happened when no spectators were around".

The two-day sevens tournament takes place on Monday and Tuesday.

The Delhi Games have suffered numerous construction and technical problems.

A footbridge collapsed at the main stadium, part of the roof at the weightlifting venue caved in, weighing scales at the boxing were faulty while the news and information service at the main media centre crashes on a regular basis.
