Former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga will play Super 15 rugby for the Chiefs next season.
The 37-year-old, who has turned out for Counties-Manukau in the national provincial championships this season, said he was looking forward to his new role.
"I'm pleased that I'm still able to contribute both on and off the field," he said in a statement.
"Playing for the Chiefs was a good fit, as I'll be able to continue to work with some of the key Counties-Manukau players, like Fritz Lee and Tim Nanai Williams."
Chiefs head coach Ian Foster said Umaga would bring valuable experience to the franchise.
"We've been really impressed with Tana as a player and his impact with Counties on his return from Europe," Foster said. "We believe he will be a valuable asset to the team as he brings a high level of experience, knowledge and leadership."
Umaga has been involved with Super rugby from its inception in 1996 and has played over 300 first class games.

He will add experience, and migth be used just as a mentor.

He will be destroyed by the youngens in the centres through.

What is the chiefs current centre pairing?

I'd think Callum Bruce and Richard Kahui looking at the player profiles, but Mike Delany's in the list, if he steps up as a flyhalf I'd actually put Steven Donald at 12, he plays much better football from there!

    Kahui's a fringe All Black isn't he?

Kahui is a very good player, and probably would be in the ABs if it wasnt for injury. But he is a bit of a Spanner when it comes to positions, able to play 11 - 14 I think.

He's been pretty good for Counties this year. Still a quality player.

That was my point, it's unlikely he'll sit the bench for a 37 year old with anger management issues, Callum Bruce is also pretty sharp IIRR
