Easy for you to say seeing your side is included. Imagine what you would be saying if it was the Rebels and The Force that were only included, but then again I forget at least you and Sydney have a fairly decent club comp which we do not have and now comes to light will fall further behind based on funding discrepancies of a magnitude unimaginable

Just saying, its a little bit premature to get all upset over something we know very little about..
The main issue that would upset most West Australian and Victorian rugby followers is the funding issue.
Until this is sorted Rugby in Australia is never going to go forward.

OK TOCC I see it this way

you work for a specific company you do the same job as the other guys working for the company but the company pay you only 6% of the other people salaries. you go and ask why and the company says you need to develop and then come talk again. You apply for development training but the company then tells you you are not included in the development plan.
Wouldn't you be pissed as well

The WA Rugby Union should raise the money themselves. If they can't they should employ people who can.

Why does everybody in this country think the world revolves around putting your hand out?

ACT, New South Wales and Queensland will always get more funding as that's where the vast majority of the players come from - and I think that's something that people should understand. However, considering that WA has (I believe) the biggest playing population outside those areas, the discrepancy in funding does seem very puzzling, especially considering we're trying to sustain a professional rugby franchise here.

With us being left out of this competition, it suggests that the ARU is quite content for the playing pool to be drawn exclusively from those traditional rugby areas - with the Western Force and the Melbourne Rebels being seen purely as 'overflow' teams and a chance to broaden viewership rather than as a potential source of talent.

The article doesn't go into much detail. If your interested in the ARU's spending, check their annual reports to find out the full story.

The competition seems like a good idea, but why they had to keep us in the dark is beyond me. Surely there is a good reason for leaving us out, if so just tell us... This sort of publicity makes them look like a bunch of unprofessional drama queens.

    That's a pretty good summation.

One thing I have noticed is that there is no mention of this competition in any other media outlet or official rugby website - makes me wonder if there is something else going on that we're not being told.

From what I can gather its not a 'real' competition. It has been set up as a means to provide the Tahs,Reds and Brumbies A teams with games and assist with the RWC preparations of the 3 Island nations. While I do think this could lead to something more sustantial in the future I really don't think it was intended to be discriminatory. Serious question here. Do the Force have a second squad as yet? If so they have a few months to work with getting them involved. As for the Rebels they haven't played as a full franchise yet let alone have the tier setups of the others.

Yeah there will be a Force second squad playing the Brumby Runners and Junior Waratahs in February (alongside the 1st XV's pre-season matches).

The Rebels haven't mentioned any kind of Academy/2nd XV set up to this point.

A big reason the Western Force bid was chosen over the Melbourne Super14 bid was because the consortium were adamant they had the ability to be financially independent....

    Nothing there about financial independence

“Each was judged against criteria established in relation to the three principle objectives of Rugby’s expansion into a Super 14 format.

    Namely;

    * Growing the elite player base of Australian Rugby
    * Increasing the mass entertainment audience for and commercial value of Australian Rugby
    * Rugby development through increased participation

The ARU Evaluation team comprising ARU Senior Management, consultants Tom Sloane (MI Associates), Bob Elphinston (IOC Evaluation Committee member) and Basil Scaffidi (SEL) conducted an exhaustive process before presenting detailed reports to the Board on each of the submissions.

“The view of the Board is that Perth will provide a conducive environment to produce high performance rugby players with regard to the combination of excellent playing and training facilities, climate & lifestyle. Commercially, both submissions were very sound in their own right.

“Subiaco Oval will be used in the first year while Members Equity Stadium is further upgraded to a 22,000 seat capacity for 2007 and beyond. There is also an opportunity to further expand the Stadium to 35,000 if the need arises.”

“For a new team in a new market, settling into your new home early is also important.

“The support program for the players and their families was such that they will be located in a tight knit community, close to their training base with excellent community facilities also contributing to a lifestyle conducive to a successful professional sporting team. These are important factors for success.

“We believe the Perth team will be warmly embraced by the Western Australian community, business, government and the media. There is a strong and established Rugby community in Perth that will provide a bedrock for this team.”

A Management Team will shortly be appointed with its first task to employ a Chief Executive Officer. The Management Team will consist of representatives of both the Rugby WA and the ARU.

Been a little melodramatic aren't we, so can I just clear up one thing, are you guys are trying to tell me that you don't think financial stability factored in the process when the Western Force was selected?

I'm not attacking the Force here, on the contrary, I'm actually crediting RugbyWA's fiscal management..Not sure why you feel the need to attack me over it brokendown gunfighter
