That would be a shame - in the absence of a Super Rugby side it at least gives the game some presence in South Australia.

Agree that it would be a loss, although i tend to think a 7's tournament on the Gold Coast is more fitting for the 'party event' type atmosphere that is down there..

The fact is that with the increasing exposure of the IRB 7's tournament, the cost and demands of hosting a leg is going to increase, George in South Africa was a players favorite but will be shunned for a bigger stadium in Cape Town from next year.

South Australian Events Corporation will have to outlay more if they are going to host the leg in the future, the ARU will have a fight on its hand just to keep the leg in Australia.

Yeah and the Olympics will only exacerbate that.

Perth has made a bid to host the Australian leg of the prestigious International Rugby Board Sevens tournament.

The two-day event in April next year would generate millions of dollars for the State economy, attracting visitors and players from overseas and interstate and a worldwide television audience.

Subiaco Oval would host the tournament, with organisers promising a carnival atmosphere, even shipping in tonnes of sand to build a "Subi-by-the-sea".

Adelaide's five-season hold on the tournament ends this year and the South Australian capital is anxious to regain the contract.

TourismWA chief executive Stephanie Buckland said Eventscorp, the State Government's events arm, had lodged a bid with the Australian Rugby Union to host the event for the next five years.

"As the bid is with the ARU, we can't reveal any details about it, except to say that it includes a range of support events," she said.

"The World Rugby Sevens is a premium international event that Eventscorp believes would be a perfect fit for Perth.

"Eventscorp wants to develop a Perth leg of the World Rugby Sevens to be the premier event of the series, surpassing even Hong Kong. "We are confident that Perth and WA would embrace the World Rugby Sevens as there is already very strong spectator and corporate support here for the code.

"There's a strong Asian involvement in the World Rugby Sevens Series which Perth is ideally placed to capitalise on. Perth is Australia's gateway to South-East Asia."

A group from the Gold Coast, which hosts a successful Sevens tournament in November, will put up stiff competition and at least one other eastern seaboard city is understood to be preparing a bid.

The IRB, the game's governing body, has insisted it wants an Australian leg but the Australian Rugby Union decides where the tournament is held.

A decision is not expected until after this April's event in Adelaide.

"Subi by the sea"? So people can actually be closer to the games then?

Shits me when Melbourne pinches things so would be hypocritical not to think the same here.
Gotta give credit to the Croweaters, they sure know how to develop an event worthy of pinching.
That said, I would go for sure, there would be no protest vote from me.

It was a great comp in Adelaide but ever since the first year, it's always been held on a Force home game weekend.
Would be great to have it in Perth

Would love to watch Kenya play in Perth. One thing you can guarantee is that there will be quite a sizeable contingent of Kenyan supporters/fans - with quite a few making the trip across the Indian Ocean and Nullarbor to Perth adding to the local Kenyan fanbase - and if you've watched any of the tournaments around the world over the past few years, you would have witnessed the festive atmosphere they bring. Fingers crossed...

Yeah KQ, also with the mining (workers) there would be no shortage of potential multi national support. Would/should be a pretty colourful crowd.

7's would go off here in Perth. Carnival atmosphere. I think we would sell out Subi for both days. Even people who dont like rugby that much go to the 7's.

A mate from Wellington has told me they have a wild time there each year. Last year there was an entire group all dressed as 101 dalmations, that's right, 101 people dressed as dogs, what a sight!

Well at least it's an improvement on 101 Kiwis with green buckets on their heads.
