Bulls dig deep and hang on to beat Lions

The Bulls held on to beat the Lions 20-24 at Coca-Cola park in a match that was the classic game of two halves.

The Bulls showed that they have lost little of the Super 14 form although they did miss out on scoring four tries and a bonus point which is unusual for the Bulls.

While the Lions showed that they will be a team to be reckoned with in 2011 they still lost the match which means their losing streak has been stretched to 15 consecutive matches.

The Lions outscored the Bulls by three tries to two and the difference was Morne Steyn's boot.

In the first half the Lions scrum started to struggle and was almost constantly penalised by Steyn and his boot.

Lions coach John Mitchell gave his players a stern talking to at half time and the Lions reacted by taking the game to the Bulls and outplaying them in the second half.

The Lions dominance in the second half was so complete that they managed to prevent the Bulls from scoring a point.

Had the hosts not squandered so many chances in the first 40 minutes, they could have recorded the first major upset of the season
