Wallabies mull moving O'Connor to inside-centre

    Greg Growden
    March 30, 2011

JAMES O'CONNOR'S recent form has been so impressive that Wallabies officials are deliberating whether he should be moved from the wing and be brought closer to the action at inside-centre.

O'Connor is also in contention to be Quade Cooper's back-up as the Test No.10 when the Wallabies go into Tri Nations and World Cup mode from July. Although the Force have only won one match, O'Connor has been the most consistent player of the five Australian teams, excelling at five-eighth. O'Connor has enthused Wallabies selectors with his aggressive attitude, eagerness to take the initiative and to test the opposition at every opportunity.

One of his best efforts was against the Stormers in Cape Town last weekend, where O'Connor provided resistance to an opposition who were right at the top of their game. The Stormers won by 35 points, but the margin would have been more embarrassing if O'Connor was not on the field. He constantly hassled the Stormers, and provided the highlight of the game when he took on their front row and winger Bryan Habana, beating all to score a classic solo try. Apart from bulking up,

O'Connor has worked hard on his goalkicking, and is sitting third on the Super Rugby points-scoring list, with a tally of 80 from two tries, 22 penalty goals and two conversions.

However, it is not anticipated the Wallabies will play O'Connor at five-eighth, as they are happy with Cooper's form - especially as the Reds pivot has played with maturity this season, cleverly mixing up his game and kicking with greater authority. But No.12 is looking like an attractive option for O'Connor, especially as it would involve him combining with Cooper or even Kurtley Beale in midfield.

O'Connor, with the Brumbies' Adam Ashley-Cooper, is rated as the most invaluable of Australian rugby assets, because of his ability to play in so many back-line positions. O'Connor was originally considered a specialist fullback, and he could easily return to the Wallabies' No.15 jersey, but will find it difficult to secure that spot this season, especially after Beale made it his during the 2010 international season.

While O'Connor has held a Test wing spot for some time, there will be greater competition this season, with Drew Mitchell, Digby Ioane, Rod Davies and Lachie Turner all making claims. As there is no prospect of O'Connor being demoted to the reserves bench, a prominent spot will have to be found for him somewhere - and the midfield could become the best option.

What will work in O'Connor's favour is that Wallabies coach Robbie Deans is a close ally. Deans has a good relationship with O'Connor, as shown during last year's end-of-season Wallabies northern hemisphere tour. The pair re-emerged from the Wallabies dressing rooms 30 minutes after the Test win over Wales at Millennium Stadium and for about 15 minutes, Deans retrieved the ball while O'Connor practised his goalkicking. In between shots, Deans would point out where O'Connor had to work on his approach and follow through.

Meanwhile, the Wallabies will start their World Cup campaign in Auckland, after confirmation yesterday their opening match against Italy on September 11 has been transferred from Christchurch to North Harbour Stadium. The Wallabies' other match, against Russia, originally set down for Christchurch on October 1, has been moved to Nelson. Before the Nelson match, the Wallabies will spend four days in Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury.

growden at his best/worst.What officials Greg?
surely they would want to see him actually play in that position before considering it?

Anyone see JOC's interview on the Rugby Club?
Kearnsey kept harping on about SBW running lines at JOC if he was to suit up at 12.
Luckily rabbit never listened to all the naysayers through out his career that said he was too small or else where would he be now? At least he's not a fragile princess like Barnes.
    Hey Kearnsey....STFU!

Yeh, JOC handled himself pretty well I thought. For those that didn't see it here it is Suggest you go to The Rugby Club Soapbox Haji and give Kearnsey a message - I asked Nick to give Kaffes a slap the other day

Looking at Super Rugby Extra Time (as much as I've been able to steel myself for yet) Rabbit's true value is doing the stuff a good 12 does, he looked like Gits in his heyday, you know, before he got so full of himself that his game fell apart.

Rabbit will make a lot of breaks once he's got a decent 10 inside him, giving him space by controlling the game and selecting the plays.......hopefully Willie will be that guy.......before the end of the season

Two sides of being a good centre.

He also needs the ability to stop the current rampaging NZ pairing?

It's not a matter of stopping them once in a game, that constant impact is going to take it's toll in a game. JOC running into the two monsters from NZ isn't going to wear them down like it'll wear him down.

You can try and run around them sure but if you don't pull off the sidestep each time you're f*****.

It's not something you want to learn in a world cup quarter/semi final.

Is AAC the only other decent ball running hard tackling centre you've got? I've forgotten who else you boys have.

Jesus don't mention Cooper either, my sides are still too sore.

I've always rated Aaron Mauger as the prototype inside centre of the last few years. Not the biggest of guys but able to do everything to a good standard. Big enough to handle the traffic or get the ball rolling if there is slow ball. Good enough at passing to offer another point of attack or continue the attack of the 10 is tackled. Another kicking option to mix things up. Very intelligent rugby player. But then again a lot of people probably look good playing alongside Dan Carter.

I would like to see the wallabies backline this year as follows. With Cooper I dont think we need another playmaker in the midfield and with mortlock getting better every game he would play the same role as anthony faingaa in babysitting cooper in defense and run hard and direct lines in attack, only much better then faingaa. Mortlocks leadership in the backline will be huge as well. JOC is better off at fullback with plenty of room to operate for the time being. Digby and AAC could alternate. Beale to add some spark in the 2nd half from the bench.

    10 cooper
    11 mitchell
    12 mortlock
    13 ioane
    14 ashley-cooper
    15 o'conner

    20 Phipps
    21 Beale
    22 McCabe

I really hope we can accommodate Cam somewhere for the RWC but maybe Stirling's come good at Cam's expense ie, could have seen JOC at 12 and Cam with some game time at 15.
