Shasta thats how long it takes... One hour to the coast and one hour to the snow... on a good run... if slow traffic, a little longer but not by much, the coast road is good these days...

Fainifo and Phibbs on out as Brumbies chase O'Connor

As Francis Fainifo and Patrick Phibbs prepare to leave Canberra, the ACT Brumbies are still hopeful of luring the player they covet most James O'Connor to the capital.

Fainifo and Phibbs are the latest to join a long list of players who will leave the Brumbies at the end of the season.

Fainifo is set to sign with a French club within the next two weeks while Phibbs is likely to choose between the NSW Waratahs and Europe.

But while they depart, the Brumbies hope to find out as early as next week whether O'Connor will accept their offer to join the two-time Super Rugby champions.

O'Connor is believed to be close to deciding where he will play in 2012 and beyond.

The Brumbies were locked in a four-way battle to sign the 20-year-old with O'Connor's current club the Western Force, the Queensland Reds and the Melbourne Rebels.

But it is believed O'Connor has narrowed his options down to two the Force and the Brumbies.

New Brumbies coach Jake White has remained in contact with the Wallabies whiz kid over the past two months.

However, Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan said it was still unclear who O'Connor would choose.

''The ball is in James's court. We've made our presentation to him and spoken to him a number of times and provided him with all the information,'' Fagan said.

''He's taken that and indicated he needed some time to make a decision, so that will be made when he feels comfortable.''

While the Brumbies wait to hear if they have secured O'Connor, Phibbs is resigned to moving on from Canberra after not being offered a new contract.

Fainifo's Brumbies contract does not expire until the end of next year, but he will sign with one of three French clubs Toulon, Tolouse or Stade Francais.

With White taking over next year, Fainifo's impending departure shows even players who have contracts for 2012 may not be in Canberra next season.

White is keen to have a variety in his squad rather than carry players who are similar and can fill the same position.....

Not fair to the Brumbies if the highlights are accurate! He should give them time to sign a decent 12, if it's between Canberra and Perth, he's ours!

All roads lead to Canberra. (and can be driven in 1 hour apparently)

PS to the regulars who have been posting that we don't really need this kid - give yerselves an uppercut, plus a reality check and quit it. One good display against the most under performing team in the comp - in which we still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - does not mean a lot. Every year he gets better and better. A couple more in Perth could will go a long way towards the making of this franchise.

Agreed, but at the same time the consequence of his leaving is nowhere near the four riders of the Apocalypse predicted by most commentators. It is hardly like we won't be able to field a team or will be looking at relocation.
