Question Elsom running out of options

WALLABIES captain Rocky Elsom is running short of Australian provinces to play for next season, with the Queensland Reds yesterday saying they do not have a spot for him.

While the Australian Rugby Union has finalised its deal with Elsom, the anticipated move from the Brumbies to the Waratahs next year was thwarted last week when NSW withdrew its offer. The Reds were mooted as an alternative but their coach, Ewen McKenzie, said yesterday he already had an abundance of back-rowers.

''I did a lot of signings last year. So we have quite a few back-rowers on two-year deals and keeping hold of Beau Robinson is a priority for us,'' McKenzie said. ''So we've pretty much got no space. If we had this discussion in March, you might have a different discussion.''

Melbourne may become an option for Elsom, who is understood not to be interested in moving to Perth. A high-profile European club is also chasing him.

What’s the matter with Perth (hopefully that’s the journo’s slant and not his)?

We wouldn’t be looking at him anyway, far too many awesome backrowers here already.

Looks like the rebels will be enjoying the services of Rocky next year.

I corrected it for them ...

Melbourne may become an option for Elsom, who is understood not to be interested in moving to Perth as no rugby team there is interested in him. A high-profile European club is also chasing him.

I would have thought the Rebels would be the no-brainer for him assuming he plans to stay, as they have been chopping and changing their back row around Delve most of the year. He'd be a really good signing for them if he stayed fit.

I thought Rebels blew their salary cap with O'Connor...perhaps they are using the same accountant that the Storm were using the last year

Why would you play top dollar for a guy who has got through about half a season of rugby over the last 2 years? Elsom just isn't worth his price-tag. Especially not when you have Scott Higginbotham, Ben McCalman, Dave Dennis, Ben Mowen and a handful of other similarly built players who are cheaper and more likely to make the field.

I would prefer Mowen over Elsom at the moment.

Elsom is past it I am afraid. His glory days of Europe are long gone. I dont even think the Rebels would look at him. Unfit and one dimensional loosies are a dime a dozen. I think some cashed up Froggie team may be the go although the deadline for them securing players has no past or is very close.

If he makes it to the RWC it will be a travesty and some hard working bugger will miss out.

I guess because he was pretty sure nobody would want him in club land and somebody was offering him money

    When fit.

Thats the problem. Same reason why I wouldn't be interested in signing Rob Horne to the Force even though we could definitely use a guy like him.

Ohh Please - the best blindside in the country - maybe three years ago but this is a long time in the rugby world - He has done bugger all since he has been back and is so one dimensional with his crash ball style that it has become too easy to read. Bye Bye Rocky
