Can anyone remember the outcome of the 3N in the preceding world cup years - did SA win the year they won Bill ? or is the 3Nations considered a poisoned chalice in a RWC year ?

3Nations is a poisoned chalice.

The Boks won only one game in the 2007 3N. They beat us in Capetown (?) something like 23-30 and only pulled it off after two monster drop goals by Francois Steyn.

The All Blacks won it in 2003 and that included a something like 50-21 win over the Wallabies who turned it around to beat them in the semi.

1999 New Zealand won it by the narrowest of narrow margins and once against got bungled out of the cup in the semis.

So, another words, if you are a great team and winning well then the odds are you may win both, but if you aren't a standout team and each match is competitive then the chances are you won't win both...
