ahhh Mark McGowan - the man who got rid of Rally Australia from WA

The Western Australian Government is seeking to end its contract with Rally Australia due to concerns over the economic viability of the event.

Perth will hold the rally this year but the Government hopes to be released from its contract in 2006.

Tourism Minister Mark McGowan says he has made the decision to redirect the $4.7 million in funding towards other events and promoting WA interstate and overseas.

Mr McGowan says over the past 15 years the Government has been putting more and more money into Rally Australia to keep it going and has received diminishing returns.

Fox tells a slightly different story, albeit similar...

The WA Government said it had spent $5.9 million of its tourism budget to stage the event last year, with a return of $9.3 million.

So its not running at a loss, but generating $3.4 million in returns at the end of the day.

That would be a direct return on investment, how much would W.A. be losing in tourist revenue, both in the city and in the S.W., not to mention TV exposure and probably other indirect exposure from this event?

This will be a significant blow to the tourist industry and the sporting public in W.A.

AFL will not be recognised as an international sport until 2 separate countries play a competitive match sanctioned by a world body. Pissant minor leagues in other countries doesn't make it international.

I read a report a few months ago about AFL in Russia where they only have enough players for 10 a side

If McGowan has put his support behind the AFL it'll be because there are more votes in that option than the rugby one. The only thing that drives policy these days is how many votes might be won or lost.
