Force winger Cummins eyes Wallaby gold

    Justin Chadwick,
    AAPMay 8, 2013, 11:57 am

He's left his run late, but Western Force winger Nick Cummins is eager to impress Wallabies coach Robbie Deans over the coming weeks in a bid to snare an unlikely berth against the British and Irish Lions.

Cummins realised a boyhood dream last year when he made his Wallabies debut against Argentina in Rosario.

The 25-year-old went on to start all four matches on the Wallabies' Spring Tour, scoring tries against England and Italy in an impressive start to his international career.

However, bone bruising on his knee cut Cummins down after round three of the Super Rugby season, ruling him out for seven straight matches.

The injury resulted in Cummins being overlooked for a recent Wallabies' training camp involving 30 players.

Deans has openly stated that players outside of that squad are still a chance to play against the Lions.

And after making a successful return in last week's 11-11 draw against Queensland Reds, Cummins is desperate to once again catch the eye of Deans.

"It's never over until the fat lady bellows out her tune," Cummins said ahead of Friday night's clash with the Chiefs in Pukekohe.

"It would have been good to play a few more games this season and show people I'm meant to be in that Wallabies squad.

"But if you want to make god laugh, you tell him your plans.

"Anything's possible coming up. It's a chance for me to impress."

Cummins said he loved his time in the Wallabies' set-up.

"Getting a gig in the gold jersey is something I've been after for my whole life," Cummins said.

"Doing it over there in Argentina for the first time was pretty special.

"My old boy flew over for it.

"It was good to share it with him.

"I roomed with Barnesy (Berrick Barnes) a few times. He's a good lad. We told a few lies and a few stories to each other, and got along like a house on fire."

The recent dumping of Force winger Alfie Mafi following a series of indiscretions has placed further pressure on Cummins to stay injury free.

The Force's line speed in defence was superb against the Reds last week, and Cummins said a repeat effort was required if they are to knock off the second-placed Chiefs, who won the championship last season.

"Knock off the Chiefs" seems like a bit of a wet dream can we change that to 'put in a good showing against the Chiefs'

Come on Gigs we played well against the reds and if not for poor kicking by Ebersohn we would have got the win

I have a good feeling for the match against the chiefs I am tipping a boil over and the force to win by 3
